I remember how many times I turned to my little Maltese Barkley for love and support at the end of my marriage. My ex husband kept Barkley from me after our divorce, and for a year and a half, all I longed for was his warm furry little face by my side. One day out of the blue, he called me and told me to either "come get him or he's going to the pound". I feel I rescued him from a fate worse than death, for he was totally neglected and had been mistreated, often left for hours on end tied to a coffee table, and sitting in a pile of his own waste. If dogs can become depressed, I am sure my little Barkley was terribly depressed before he came to live with me. He has never fully recovered, but I do my best to keep him happy and healthy. Like all little old men, he's going bald now, and arthritis has affected the mobility of his hind legs. But he still looks at me through eyes of love - and that love is returned to him tenfold. he is my true companion for life! Star was with me through a horrible relationship of verbal abuse and when my abuser kicked me out of the house the motel where I stayed at let me have star with me every day i look into his little brown eyes and wonder where I would be without him. Pets are wonderful therapy for bad to horrible times especially chihuahuas they are so smart and always seem to know whats going on.
